Be My sister Olivia Delgado has a rare disease called Leukodystrophy. This disease affects the central nervous system by disrupting the growth or maintenance of the myelin sheath, which insulates nerve cells. It is progressive which means it tends to worsen as she gets older. When she was younger she was able to walk and talk. Olivia was known for her amusing personality and positive attitude. She liked to play jokes on people and was notorious for remembering everyone’s birthday in our family. Even though we are 4 years apart we were very close growing up. She is now 30 years old, hardly talks and is wheelchair bound.
My mother is a single parent and cares for my sister by herself. She has to transport her to and from doctor’s appointments, physical therapy and to and from her day program. We were lucky that the Leukodystrophy foundation had loaned my mom a 1996 Ford Econoline to use up until about a year ago when it broke down beyond repair. We were able to obtain a 2010 Toyota Sienna that was handicap accessible. We have collectively tried to maintain this cost but with all of Olivia’s medical costs and the expense of daily living it has become impossible. I am writing this in the hopes that you can help me help my mom and sister keep the handicap van.
There are a lot of things Olivia can’t do anymore, but we try very hard to keep doing some of the things she loves, like going to the movies, taking her bowling and attending family functions. This van is a necessity in my sister’s life.
Olivia and I will always share a special sister bond. I love her very much and would do anything to see her happy. Watching the progression of Olivia’s disease has been heartbreaking to watch but it only encourages me more to make sure she has the best quality of life possible and I hope you can help me make that happen by donating to her fund.
