Omar's American Dream is Slipping Away - Your Help Can Save It
I'm creating this campaign on behalf of Omar, a DACA recipient whose life has been turned upside down due to unexpected delays in his DACA renewal. Since January, this bureaucratic hurdle has snowballed into job loss, financial ruin, and a health crisis that threatens his well-being.
Omar has called the United States home since he was a child. He's the hardest-working person I've ever known, and this experience has deeply impacted his mental health and sense of belonging in our community. When government delays affected his DACA renewal and work permit, he suddenly lost his job and ability to work legally.
Timeline:
January 2024: Omar's DACA renewal was delayed, and he was terminated from his job due to an expired work permit
March 2024: Began missing bill payments
April 2024: Forced to stop taking diabetes medication
June 2024: Received his work permit and immediately began applying for jobs and doing gig work for cash, but it barely scratches the surface.
The Impact:
Omar has fallen severely behind on bills and is facing potential eviction.
His credit score, which he had been diligently working to repair, was again ruined.
Most critically, Omar's health is in jeopardy. He has diabetes and PTSD from experiencing homelessness and abuse in his adolescence. He has been forced to give up vital medications due to a lack of funds and insurance.
Because of his DACA status, Omar doesn't qualify for public assistance, leaving him with no safety net.
Despite starting gig work to earn extra money, the income is insufficient to cover his basic needs and medical expenses.
We're desperately seeking help for Omar to:
Catch up on overdue bills: $4,000
Cover basic living expenses for three months: $3,000
Pay for essential diabetes medications and care: $3,000
Total Goal: $10,000
About Omar:
Omar was born in Puebla, Mexico, and brought to the United States when he was just six years old. He grew up in New York City, was raised by a single mother, and lacked stable housing. When he was fourteen, he dropped out of high school to enter the workforce and support his family to help pull them out of homelessness. Succeeding in this venture, Omar later went on to earn his GED, as education has always been important to him.
When President Obama enacted the DACA program in 2012, Omar jumped on the opportunity to finally be able to work legally. Since then, he has maintained consistent employment, working his way up in the fashion industry. He completed his Associate's degree in Liberal Arts from the Borough of Manhattan Community College in 2023 in just two years while working full-time. He was recently admitted into NYU to begin classes in Fall 2024 for his Bachelor's in Marketing. His goal to pursue a marketing degree from NYU would open up new opportunities and allow him to contribute even more to his community and the economy. Like many others, Omar hopes to become a U.S. citizen and own a home one day – to fully embrace the American dream that has shaped his life since childhood. He is not just a hard worker; he's a dreamer with aspirations that inspire those around him.
Despite the challenges he's facing, Omar remains a wonderful partner, friend, and son who always tries to do the right thing. He's known for being there for others, even in tough times. His determination and positive outlook continue to shine through these hardships and inspire me every single day.
