Story
As we prepare to open the center, we are encouraged by the story of a young pregnant woman who came to a previous center one of our staff worked in. She came thinking her only option in her circumstances was to terminate her pregnancy. How would she stay in school, work and have a baby? How would she be able to afford all the needed necessities? These were real concerns and seemed insurmountable. She had been in a serious relationship, and shortly before discovering she was pregnant, the relationship ended with the boyfriend moving to another city. When she told him she was pregnant, he encouraged her to have an abortion.
She found her way to the pregnancy center not knowing how far along she was. With nonjudgmental loving acceptance, she was offered a free ultrasound and saw her 10-week-old baby. She was also offered continued support through the center including clothing, diapers and other essentials for as long as she needed them. Because of the loving help and support of the center, she saw she was not alone. Her biggest fears began to seem a little less as she found she had resources for just about everything she would need. She also realized she could continue her pregnancy and also her dreams.
Fast-forward 9 years. This young woman returned to the center to introduce her 9-year-old son. Through the years, she had been open with him about her experience at the center and how grateful she was to have him in her life. That day they came to the center with gifts—gifts that he had asked his friends to give him for his birthday. They were not for himself but for other moms and their babies at the center, the same center his mom went to 9 years ago. He came with stacks of diapers, bottles, baby clothing, wipes, baby toys and a smile that lit up the room. The joy of this young boy in giving gifts to other moms and babies in need and the joy this brought his mother was beautiful. There were more than a few tears shed that day.
Because of the support of the pregnancy center, this young child was able to have life and to bring continued joy to his mom. As he clasped his arms around his momma’s neck hugging and comforting her that day, she was able to tell him her tears were of joy and how very proud she was of him.
