Help Our Farm Recover from Severe Storm Damage
Donation protected
Greetings from Heart City Farm,
We are Matthew, Madeleine, Kalen & Matt, a collaborative farm team growing fresh produce in Ottawa's Greenbelt. Our goal is to provide our community with top-quality vegetables. On Saturday, May 21st, 2022, a very rare and widespread severe storm hit our city and surrounding areas. Our farm property was significantly impacted, causing damage to crucial infrastructure, felling large trees, and a power outage that we are still facing today. We are grateful for the help we have already received from our community with providing cold storage and backup generators. Thank you so much The Third, Dominion City Brewing Co., Yummy Cookies & Tom Marcantonio!
Our primary concern beyond having power restored is trying to replace the destroyed high tunnels that were crumpled by the storm. Matt H & Kalen had invested their savings and put effort and care into installing two new production tunnels for our long-season summer crops. The plan was to plant into them in the coming weeks. In order to move forward with the growing season, the team has decided to source new tunnels. We are reaching out to our community to help cover the costs of these new tunnels and other recovery costs included below.
- 2 x high tunnels
- time & labour to install replacement tunnels
- replacement and repair costs for other damaged field equipment (ie. row cover)
- time and labour for property clean up
- fuel costs for backup generators
- product loss from storm damage and lack of electricity
Any donation is greatly appreciated and we thank you in advance for your support. Although the last few days have been turbulent for our team everyone is safe, staying positive and looking forward to a productive season ahead.
Sincerely,
Heart City Farm <3
