Studio Safar, Papercup, Jana Saleh are an integral part of Beirut's new creative wave. Despite all the obstacles and challenges that working in a city like Beirut presented, they endured and surmounted them all out of their determination to remain based here.
Their contributions have greatly enriched and nurtured not only our visual culture, but our creative community. Now it's time for us to give back to them.
Due to the financial crisis and the coronavirus pandemic in Beirut, these independent small-businesses were already at the edge of survival, living day by day in uncertainty. The bomb blast in Beirut has been an enormous blow.
Their studios were based in two of the city's hardest hit areas: Mar Mikhael and Gemmayzeh. With their working spaces, equipment, archives, and in one case, home, completely destroyed - it is literally impossible for them to get back on their feet without our financial help.
The funds will be withdrawn by our trusted foreign beneficiary and good friend, Jonathan Blezard as we cannot send funds directly to Lebanon as per gofundme guidelines. They will then be equally divided into three and transferred to each business. We all agreed this was the fastest and most effective way to get the funds to our talents, as time is of the essence in this situation.
We are aiming to raise a minimum of 10,000EU for each. Each will then allocate the funds themselves based on their direct needs - be it to help them relocate to safer spaces, replace / fix any damaged equipment, pay employees, or preserving their stock and archives.
Maya, Hatem, Rania, and Jana, have nurtured hundreds of young designers, musicians, fashion designers, and creatives throughout the last decade. Let's make sure that they can continue to live and work in Beirut as they intended!
