I've been blessed to do what I love since I was a little girl. The stage was and is my first love. When I was 10 years old I booked my first Broadway show that led me on a journey to New York. Four Broadway credits and a BFA in Musical Theater later, I'm a young woman living in New York City still living and working as an actress, auditioning and working out that dream every day.
That love for the stage was born in an old retired elementary school in Barnegat, NJ with Momma Sherry directing 60 kids as little "munchkins" in The Wizard of Oz. My mom had taken me to see Oliver! at Our Gang Players in 2004 and I could hardly stay in my seat. By intermission she knew she had to get me involved. The Wizard of Oz was the first of 10 shows I did with Our Gang from the ages of seven to ten. Ten shows later I was hooked. I even got my brother (Micah Fowler) to do one or two with me! The stage wasn't his forte, but 10 years later, he would go on to star in a prime time TV series on ABC for three seasons (Speechless). Without Momma Sherry and without Our Gang Players, Micah and I would not be who or where we are today and we are forever grateful.
Ours are just two stories of thousands.
Momma Sherry has touched the lives of countless people of all ages through her love, hugs, fabulous personality and cultivation of the arts and community. It's our turn to give back to her.
With the global shut down due to COVID-19, Our Gang had to cancel all their events & fundraisers this spring, and has had no source of income. The bills have piled up & the rent has not been able to be paid. Therefore, they're having to vacate their 4000 sq ft storage facility which houses their set pieces, wood stock, power tools/equipment, costumes, props and furniture pieces. Much has been taken, but much still remains from 15+ years of accumulation. They must be out in the next 2 weeks and do not have enough time or man power.
To dispose of what's left (particularly the wood) will cost over $14,000. There remains a storage back rent payment of over $9,500 putting Our Gang Players and Momma Sherry almost $25,000 in debt.
Momma Sherry is 71 years old and is devastated.
Her hope is that Our Gang is able to recover and thrive once again.
We can not leave Momma Sherry with this burden and debt after all she has poured in to our community since Our Gang's Founding in 1977.
If an Our Gang performance has ever put a smile on your face, please donate what you can, share with your community and comment your story below to help this incredible theater company and the remarkable woman behind it all. I know Mamma Sherry will be so grateful, not only for your donation, but for your story!
Much love and many thanks for what you're able to give,
Kelsey Fowler
