Help Our Homestays Through This Crisis Period!

Donation protected
It’s now been 4 months since we have been unable to accept visitors or volunteers due to the borders being closed and the covid-19 crisis. Not only has this affected our elephants, it has affected our project as a whole, including our homestay hosts. As many of you who have visited will already know, the village we work with is low income, so in order to not only help the elephants, but also the community, we set them up with homestays to host all our guests, volunteers and interns.

This has been a great success, with the majority of the village very interested in becoming a homestay due to the easy income it is for them and their families. Now that we have had to close for the foreseeable future, the homestays have gone without this income for several months already, and most likely will for a few months more. Many of them, or their family members, have also lost jobs or other sources of income because of the tourism shutting down, such as mahouts, tour guides, or even those working in hotels in the city. Everyone has had to come home to their village and have turned to growing more corn as the only alternative to ensure they can pay off any debts and support their family, however due to the lack of rain this year, this is also a struggle.

We want to try to fundraise to help give them as much support as we are able to. As mentioned, we have been closed for several months so we are also living off donations to support our elephants, the other 60 elephants in our area, and cover any running costs we need to survive, so we have set up this fundraiser to help the homestay community. All funds received through this page will be given to them.

We currently have 11 homestays and any donations will be split equally among them all to ensure a fair and even distribution. Please help us raise some funds by donating and sharing this fundraiser, many of you will have already joined us previously and stayed in these homestays with their very welcoming and hospitable hosts, now is their time of need.
