On September 22nd, our parent's house was broken into, and they were robbed. Detectives believe they are one of the growing amount of victims of a racially motivated attack against Asian business owners.
Many of you have known our parents as the beloved owners of Sapporo Japanese Steakhouse for the past 30 years. They have loved and served their community with everything they have, and they've now been robbed of everything they have earned. To us, they are our heroes. They came to this country from South Korea without the ability to speak English and with no money in their pockets. With the money they saved from working in various restaurants, they opened up their own, Sapporo's, 30 years ago. They have worked so incredibly hard as immigrants to not only make a better life for themselves but for us as well. The blood, sweat, and tears they have put into the restaurant are what allowed their three children to go to college and follow their dreams. They are truly the American dream, who have now been violated and have had all of it taken away from them.
What has happened to our parents is almost nauseating. It has taken a toll on them, as our mother had to be rushed to the hospital shortly after the incident. They continue to live in fear and question why anyone would do this to them simply for being Asian. There has been almost no media coverage of their incident or of the growing racially targeted robberies against Asian Americans here in Pennsylvania.
My siblings and I debated for a while about starting this, as our parents have always been so humble. However, the losses have been detrimental, and we want to help them cover some of their losses. We appreciate all of you and anything you offer, even if it is to share our story and protect the Asian American community.
