Help our student Sonia stay in Midwifery school!
Donation protected
Sonia Lizama is a talented birthworker and student of midwifery. If you are lucky enough to know her personally, you will know she is incredibly kind, strong, noble, intuitive, funny, fierce, and loving. Throughout her first year of learning at Midwives College of Utah, she was simultaneously taking a course in traditional Central American midwifery with a midwife from El Salvador who shares her cultural background and is keeping ancient midwifery practices alive. We are lucky to have her as our apprentice at Community Birth Works. She is beloved by clients and makes everyone who walks through our doors feel safe, seen, and cared for. She is a tremendous asset to us and our clients at every birth.
Sonia and her family have very suddenly and unexpectedly come upon hard times. She is in great need of community support to stay in the Bay Area and continue her education. Sonia needs immediate financial assistance to secure new housing and pay for tuition, books, and living expenses. Without this aid, she may need to leave the Bay Area, our practice, and her midwifery education.
Given how many lives Sonia has touched, we are confident we can come together and create a safety net for her. She is on track to become one of the few home birth midwives of color, Latinx midwives, and one of just a handful of native Spanish-speaking midwives in the Bay Area. Her ability to continue her education has broader implications in terms of birth equity and justice, closing health disparities for birthing people of color, and diversifying the field of midwifery in the US. Please consider your donation to Sonia’s education as one that will have ripple effects throughout her community and benefit all the clients that Sonia will someday serve. Help her become the powerhouse Partera she is destined to be!
