Help Oxana Beat Metastatic State 4 Cancer

Most of us understand the gut-punch you get when you hear the CANCER word. Whether it’s a diagnosis a loved one receives or one we hear for ourselves, nothing prepares you. The roller coaster of emotional, physical, and financial trauma that is experienced is life-altering. Now imagine hearing that word…THREE TIMES - all before you even reach your mid-forties.

My wife Oxana has been fighting cancer for the last 18 years of her life. 

Oxana battled two rounds of breast cancer at a young age, and she beat it. She looked at it with her feisty, not-giving-up resolve and won. With battle scars earned, she began to look forward into life in the beautiful way she does.

However, in 2020 Oxana's breast cancer returned for the third time, and this time with a vengeance - Stage 4 Metastatic Cancer tumors were found in her liver. In true character, Oxana armed herself with even more determination and faith, and jumped into the ugly fight. As with the last two times, she immediately began the conventional treatment recommended by her oncologist. However, she started wondering if the traditional treatment alone would be enough, since cancer recurred again. In the last 15 years, she has had multiple surgeries, multiple chemo and radiation treatments, injections, and pills. But cancer keeps returning despite all the changes we made as a family, and she particularly has made to her lifestyle. After getting her most current diagnosis, Oxana felt like the traditional medical system was missing something. Her doctors were unable to answer the questions she had. At that point, Oxana began to avidly consume articles from cancer centers, medical publications, and helpful books to understand the causes of cancer, and the effects of drugs, treatments, and lifestyle on conquering this horrible disease. 

While weighing her treatment options, Oxana’s oncologist ordered a comprehensive genetic test, which revealed worrisome results. This type of test provides a list of medications that a cancer patient would respond to. However, her results had listed only one medication… the one she has been taking since last year. Here’s where the rock meets the hard place. Your body builds resistance to specific treatments over time. This is why a variety of medications are used in the treatment of cancer. Oxana’s doctors are certain that her body will reject current medication at some point. There are no other options available for her when her body stops responding to this medication - only some clinical trials and non-traditional treatments. 

Following this news, Oxana has ardently started reading information on specific non-traditional treatments - including testimonials and interviews with dozens of physicians. She has been consulting with several doctors that have both conventional and non-conventional education and successful experience treating cancer. Each of them reviewed her case and their opinions and recommendations on her treatment were consistent. Oxana has decided to pursue a few of the recommended non-traditional treatments in conjunction with the traditional treatment. Many other patients have had very good results with combining non-traditional and traditional treatments. Many such treatments are recognized in other parts of the world and, at times, are used as standard protocol. There is solid hope in this course of action. While being on a combination of treatments, some positive response on shrinking tumors has been achieved. Nevertheless, Oxana is not in remission yet. 

Unfortunately, none of the non-traditional treatments and appointments with doctors are covered by insurance. Many Cancer Centers we have contacted, including couple of advanced ones, do not accept our medical insurance. Therefore, in her case, treatments at these centers are not covered either. Treatments are not cheap, and the cost is adding a huge challenge to this fight for life. We have spent over $15,000 in first six months on alternative treatments and uncovered traditional treatments - and this was just the beginning. Our burden grows every day. We are unable to carry this financial burden alone.

The last two years have been very overwhelming and emotional. They have changed our lives. We still find positive things, laugh and build good memories, pray and dream about growing old together, despite Oxana’s multiple daily side effects from treatments. We believe this is how you live while fighting.
