Paul Doerr beat MDS Leukemia

Donation protected
This is my identical twin brother Paul. He is fighting for his life in Las Vegas with his wife Sandy of 27 years, and his 21-year-old daughter, Maddie. They are an amazing family, and they need your help. Paul needs a bone marrow transplant to save his life. Your donation or sharing this page can make it happen for Paul, Sandy and Maddie.

Paul has been a very healthy man his entire life. Imagine his shock when about a year ago at age 57 Paul began to feel weak and fatigued performing minor day to day tasks. Blood tests initially showed a slight drop in red blood cell counts. Over the next few months his blood counts continued to drop, but now it was affecting all the cells including his white blood cells and platelets. In August of last year a bone marrow biopsy was performed. The news was not good. The biopsy confirmed that Paul has a rare, high-risk form of blood cancer called Myelodysplastic Syndrome – MDS Leukemia. It was Cancer. Within 3 days of diagnosis, he received a chest port and started chemotherapy. Since that time, he has received multiple chemo treatments, blood transfusions, and hospital stays to control and maintain his blood levels.

The first four rounds of Chemo did not do the job, and he recently survived a month of high intensity chemo as an inpatient at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas. Sandy was at his side the entire time while juggling her own job and advocating for Paul. Being a patient of any disease during a pandemic is beyond challenging and scary. This treatment got him closer to transplant, but not close enough. He is starting another round of chemo in March. The goal is to push the Cancer into remission so that a stem cell transplant can be performed. A transplant is the only cure.

Please send positive thoughts and prayers for Paul that this will get him to transplant. Unfortunately, Las Vegas does not have a transplant center, which means he and Sandy will have to temporarily relocate to Los Angeles to receive the transplant. Insurance will cover most of the procedure, but a large portion of lodging and other expenses will come out of pocket. The transplant will require that Paul and Sandy stay in California for at least 4 months after the procedure.  Sandy works tirelessly as his caregiver, and at the same time, she continues to work as the primary income for their family.  Paul worked for Clark County Nevada for over 16 years, but he was unable to return to work, and the circumstances have forced him into an early retirement with an income that is just a fraction of his regular pay.

We need your help to get Paul to California to receive this life saving treatment! All funds raised will go toward travel, lodging and medical expenses for the stem cell transplant. Please consider giving if you can.

Another way you can help Paul is by donating blood in your local community. Paul has benefited multiple times from the kindness of complete strangers with multiple blood transfusions. Blood banks are in dire need of donors right now due to the Pandemic.
