Please help us pay for Maki's surgery for a pericardial-peritoneal hernia.
Maki (Top kitten) and his sister Sushi joined our family on November 24th through Project Luni at 8 weeks of age. Maki was the most gentle and loving kitten imaginable. He was always ready with a purr and a snuggle.
On January 3rd he was rushed to Mount Pleasant Emergency Care as he was having difficulty breathing. Over the next couple of hours, they were able to deduce that he has a pericardial-peritoneal hernia. This would have developed in him as he was still inside his mother and is congenital. In Maki's case, at some point on Sunday the liver perforated the diaphragm, and the liver moved into the chest cavity where the heart and lungs are, reducing their ability to function properly.

The only treatment available was to perform surgery that would move the organs back into their original places, and then close the hole in the diaphragm. The veterinarians said with the surgery he should have a completely normal life if he recovers from the surgery, however, without this, he is terminal over the next couple of days. This is major surgery for our small furbaby, and with the associated tests, as well as the ICU hospital stay required after surgery, the veterinarians estimated the total bill at $10,000. Although we could not afford it, we went ahead as we felt that with the chance to save him, we had to try.
The surgery was completed. He was such a fighter. Immediately after surgery, the veterinarians kept Maki slightly sedated to keep him intubated to ventilate on his own. He did not seem to cope once they took out the endotracheal tube. They did have to perform resuscitation on him 3x that evening. They tried to keep him sedated so his breathing could recover a bit before they tried to wake him up again. The vets felt that he really just needed time for the changes in his lungs due to the hernia to clear.
Later the next day we heard he was intubated for approximately 3 hours but he mostly breathed on his own under sedation, needing us to manually ventilate him only occasionally. At 11 pm he was struggling to get up despite sedation. Seeing how his breathing looked a bit better, the vet extubated him and stopped the sedation. He was breathing on his own for the past hour in the oxygen cage. His blood pressure was low after resuscitation but they were giving him fluid therapy to manage it. It looked like he was trying to fight. The vet felt it's worth doing what we can for the next 24 Hours.
Sadly, the next day we heard that the breathing and heartbeat had slowed and that even though he had fought so hard, it was more humane to allow him to pass peacefully.
In the end, his surgery costs came to just under $8000 SGD. Any money raised will be used to offset this amount due. We are so heartbroken to have lost him. Anything you can give would be most appreciated.
