Help Pay for Mara's Care During Her Chemotherapy
Donation protected
7 Months ago, my sweet, kind, beautiful, animal-loving, stroke-survivor sister MARA CAMPBELL PEREA was airlifted from her home in New Mexico to Amarillo, Texas where she was diagnosed with a Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma tumor on her spine and immediately started radiation treatments. She handled the radiation very well and the tumor appeared to have diminished to a mere shadow. We were thrilled. We cryed on the phone together. She continued fighting the cancer with a series of chemotherapy treatments and was allowed to begin physical therapy to get back on her feet. Driven by her overwhelming desire to get back home to New Mexico and her beloved dog and cats, she worked hard and pushed to get better as quickly as possible and she actually started walking again if only a few steps at a time.
She'd had only two of her scheduled chemotherapy treatments when her progress was interrupted by a serious case of Covid 19. Covid sent her back into the hospital for 2 more months where she nearly died, struggling with pneumonia, a collapsed lung, and multiple related surgeries and procedures. It was a terrible set-back but finally, she began to bounce back again and was released to a skilled nursing facility again, where she got stronger and eventually restarted her physical therapy, although at a much lower level this time due to her worsened overall condition caused by the Covid, surgeries, and months in the hospital.
Unfortunately, last week Mara began to experience severe pain in her back, armpits, and knee and over the weekend she returned to the hospital. Sadly, this week we received the terrible news that the cancer has returned and she's had a relapse of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and is in need of several new months of treatments. We suspect that the relapse occurred because she wasn't able to receive the complete series of chemotherapy treatments the first time around because of the Covid infection.
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma cancer is very treatable and there is a high success rate and survival rate with radiation and chemotherapy. Our challenge now is that the medical system for whatever reason, requires patients like Mara to live in private-pay long-term care facilities outside of the hospital and outside of skilled-nursing facilities while receiving treatments. As you can imagine, this type of private care is very costly: $6k — $10k per month so we are asking for help to pay for Mara's lodging and transportation costs (to and from the cancer treatment center) while she receives treatments for the next few months.
Please consider donating whatever you can to help Mara recover once and for all so she can get back home to her life and her beloved pets.
Thank you,
