Help pay Steve's funeral expenses
Donation protected
Everyone who knows me knows about Steve - friend, neighbor, grandfather figure. He was truly one of a kind.
Unfortunately, he passed away in the hospital this past week from a sudden heart attack. I was able to reach a family member of his who would like to claim his body and give him a proper memorial, but we need help to put the funds together.
All donations will go towards having his body cremated.
No donation is too small and sharing is always appreciated. Thank you all for your well wishes during this incredibly hard time.
Background
Hi, my name's Abbee and I live in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York. When I moved here in 2021, I knew no one - it was just me and my German Shepherd, Teddy. Having a dog is a blessing in a lot of ways, but I never expected he would be the reason I met an incredible person like Steve.
Steve was a long-time unhoused resident of my neighborhood whom I met while walking Teddy. It was love at first sight for those two and they became inseparable. We started stopping by to say hi to Steve every morning and every night on our walks. Steve became more than a friend to me; he's family.
he's he's We spent that first summer drinking together and becoming close, but it was when I got sober that he really showed up. He became my biggest cheerleader. The day I relapsed, I came home covered in vomit and he was outside my building to ask me what happened and offer me a clean shirt to change into. He told me everything was gonna be alright, and that he knew I could do this. I could get sober again and stay sober. I haven't had another drink in the 600+ days since.
Steve's own battle with substance use disorder and homelessness was not unique, but his kind, loving nature and the care he showed to others were. He was loved by our community and deserves a send-off with dignity and care. Please help us make that happen.
