Help Pedro get a new wheelchair!
Donation protected
Hi friends!
Many of you know already, but some of you who will read this do not know. So I’m going to tell a bit of our story.
My name is Kimberly, my husband is Pedro. We have been married for 17 years, but together about 21 years. We are definitely best friends. We have 2 kiddos together, Mia & Pedro Jr. & I have a son from a previous relationship, Matthew.
Pedro was in a horrible accident on September 28, 2014. Almost 9 years ago, he was in a rollover single car accident. Pedro was the passenger. He was ejected through the windshield & sustained life-threatening injuries. Pedro was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he stayed in the Shock Trauma Intensive Care Unit for 6 weeks. Then he was transferred to a Memorial Hermann TIRR Rehabilitation Hospital and he stay there another 8 weeks. In the accident, Pedro’s spinal cord was nearly severed. By the grace of God, it was an incomplete injury at level C1-C6. He has various complications & issues that come along with a spinal cord injury. The most notable being his inability to walk.
He currently has Medicare as his only form of insurance. Medicare is a blessing for sure, but it only pays 80% of medical costs. And I’m sure you all know, with a condition such as Pedro’s, it’s pretty expensive.
Pedro does receive disability, & for that we are grateful. He worked a lot before his injury & paid a lot into Medicare/Social Security. I also work full-time after putting myself through college to earn an associate degree in accounting. Our daughter also works full time & she will begin college next week! Our son, Pete is a senior this year and homeschools, he is able to stay home with his dad while I work. He is involved here in Baytown in a local boxing club. I say all of that to explain that we are a very active family & are all very involved in my husband’s care & his well-being.
Now as of yesterday, it has been 5 years since he received this last wheelchair. It is literally being held together in some places with zip ties & duct tape. The control sticks & this causes the chair to not stop as it should. The seat, as it’s reclining, is a little shaky. It is time for a new chair.
A new set of wheels!
Pedro’s new “G ride” if you will….. lol.
Pedro received the orders months ago & was able to choose the color scheme, the cup holder type, things like that. And he was measured & pressure mapped to insure it will be a perfect fit. In fact, the back rest will be a custom fitted one due to his weakness on his right side, his paralyzed side, that causes him to lean significantly. His spine is curving & the new back rest will hopefully correct that while he is sitting in his chair.
Pedro cannot walk. He is what is called a tetraplegic. He is completely paralyzed on his right side from about his collarbone down. His left side is weak, but has feeling & sensation whereas his right side has none.
The wheelchair vendor has submitted the orders to insurance. The chair in total will be around $25,000. We will be responsible for 20% of that, so $5,000 is our share. We were told that payments are possible, but only after we pay half of what we owe. And that portion has to be paid before they will order the parts & begin to build the chair, which will take about 6 weeks.
So we need to pay $2,500 in order to get his chair ordered & built. We are asking for any help we can receive toward that portion only, the rest we will finance.
Thank you for reading our story. We appreciate your time. We wish you health & blessings!
