Help People To See Again-Cataract Camp in Uganda

My name is Umut Duygu Uzunel and I am a medical doctor who graduated from Aegean (Ege) University in Turkiye in 2000 and I became an ophthalmologist in 2005. My passion is to help people who are in need and are unable to access the healthcare system. That’s why I chose to travel to the poor part of the world for volunteer surgeries after becoming an expert on what I do. I made more than 10,000 surgeries, including mostly cataract surgeries with sutureless technique (phacoemulsification), but also glaucoma and oculoplastic surgeries. I have travelled to Mali, Somalia, Senegal and Uganda for eye surgeries (I made over 3000 surgeries, which means changing at least 2000 lives) that were done free of charge with the help of supporters and donors like you. Now, I am planning to go to Jinja, Uganda in November 2023 to do 100 eye surgeries along with training the local ophthalmologist, Dr. Asha Udu and an ophthalmologist from Germany (who will proceed with the cataract project after me), to do phacoemulsification, the latest surgery that is done in the West part of the World. We aim the equity for all people to access the same healthcare conditions. During this project, the team will go to the rural areas of Uganda to find the poor people who cannot access any treatments otherwise and they will be transferred to the hospital to our “Cataract Surgery Camp”. According to our previous experiences, each surgery cost is estimated at 200 USD. We need 20,000 usd (equals around 27,300 cad). 7000 cad has been already donated by the one of my supporters and 20,000 cad is required. The cost of each surgery includes a single-use drape, surgical knives, a foldable intra-ocular lens with a single-use lens injector, and other sterile supplies and materials that are gonna be used during the surgeries and commute costs to bring the person to the hospital and at least 2-day accommodation and daily 3 meals. Adım Umut Duygu Uzunel ve 2000 yılında Türkiye'de Ege Üniversitesi'nden mezun olmuş bir tıp doktoruyum ve 2005 yılında göz doktoru oldum. Benim tutkum, ihtiyacı olan ve sağlık sistemine erişemeyen insanlara yardım etmektir. Bu yüzden yaptığım işte uzmanlaştıktan sonra gönüllü ameliyatlar için dünyanın fakir bölgelerine seyahat etmeyi seçtim. Ağırlıklı olarak sütürsüz teknikle (fakoemülsifikasyon) katarakt ameliyatları olmak uzere, glokom ve okuloplastik ameliyatlari da iceren 10.000'den fazla ameliyat yaptım. Sizin gibi destekçilerin ve bagiscilarin yardımıyla ücretsiz olarak yapılan göz ameliyatları (3000'den fazla ameliyat yaptim, yani en az 2000 kişinin hayatını değiştirmek anlamına gelir) için Mali, Somali, Senegal ve Uganda'ya gittim. Şimdi, Kasim 2023'de Uganda'nin Jinja kentine giderek 100 göz ameliyatı yapmayı ve yerel göz doktoru Dr. Asha Udu' nun ve Almanya'dan bir doktorun (benden sonraki gonullu projelere devam edecek olan) sutursuz katarakt cerrahisini (gelismis ulkelerde uygulanan katarakt cerrahisi) ogrenmesi icin egitim vermeyi planliyorum. Tüm insanların aynı sağlık koşullarına erişmesi için eşitliği hedefliyoruz. Bu proje sırasında bir grup saglik gorevlisi, Jinja'nin kırsal bölgelerine gidecek ve başka türlü tedaviye ulaşamayacak yoksulları bulup, onlari hastaneye “Katarakt Cerrahisi Kampımıza” getirecek. Daha önceki tecrubelerimize dayanarak herbir ameliyatın maliyeti 200 usd olarak hesaplandı. Bizim 20,000 usd yani yaklaşık 27,300 cad a ihtiyacımız var. 7000 cad i bir bagiscimiz tarafından ödendiği icin gerekli olan miktar 20,000 cad. Her bir ameliyatin maliyeti, tek kullanımlık örtü, cerrahi bıçaklar, tek kullanımlık lens enjektörlü katlanabilir göz içi merceği ve ameliyatlar sırasında kullanılacak diğer steril malzemeler ile ameliyathaneye gidip gelmek için gerekli olan yol masraflari, en az 2 gecelik konaklama ve gunluk 3 ogun yemek ikramini icermektedir. Herhangi bir miktar bagis yaparak, haydi hayatları değiştirelim.
