Legal help for those experiencing domestic abuse
Hello
Ann was a Hackney-based lawyer who worked tirelessly to help people and families experiencing domestic abuse.
Ann believed that everyone had an equal right to legal representation.
Legal Aid meant she could provide her expertise and help to people and families who have no means to pay legal fees.
But cuts to Legal Aid in recent years have severely impacted on the ability of people who experience domestic abuse to access legal advice or lawyers.
That didn't stop Ann. She always found a way.
Ann died suddenly from a brain tumour on 14 September 2020 and is hugely missed by her family and friends as well as those she helped over the years.
We are some of Ann's many friends and we want to see her vital work carried on.
So, on 16 October 2021 we walked around Ann’s beloved Hackney to raise funds to set up a new charity initiative in Ann’s name to carry on her work.
We want to do our best for people without funds to get legal help when they need it most.
That is one way we think we can help honour our lovely friend's spirit.
We need at least £2000 to kick start Ann's charity.
Domestic violence is the main cause of death for women aged 15 - 44.
And according to official statistics in the year ending March 2020, there were:
- an estimated 1.6 million women who experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales
- there were 618,000 women who were assaulted.
- and there were 892,000 women who were stalked.
Many are not getting the legal help they deserve.
That is why we would be so grateful if you can help us by donating or running your own fundraiser event to contribute money towards our set up costs.
Thank you for reading our page.
We will keep updating this page as we make progress towards setting up Ann's charity initiative.
Update 18 October
Thank you to everyone who supported us on our Ann's Hackney Hangouts walk on 16 October. We covered 7.2 kilometres of Hackney from Stoke Newington N16 to Clapton E5 with many stops, stories, laughs and shared memories along the way. We ended the day at Ann's tulip tree - planted on Hackney Downs, Ann's local and much loved park, in her memory.
We are heading towards our £2k
target and with your help we will be able to take the first steps towards creating More Anns to carry on her work and keep her spirit alive and flourishing!
Thank you everyone for your love and kindness.
