A little over a year ago I was diagnosed with a mild case of Parkinson's disease. It progressed until August when it became obvious I had to give up teaching and retire. My Social Security of $1,690 is now my only source of income. I am afraid I have spent all my retirement money.
I moved to Tampa in January, 2021, living in a one bedroom apartment in a village that looks like a trailer park. My rent is $780 per month. I don't have much leeway for all of my other expenses.
I have incurred debt before I adjusted to a new way of thinking about spending money. I owe my brother in law $545.23 which i want to pay back asap
I am a month behind in my rent and I pay a $70 penalty for not being on time. My next rent is due on December 1st.
I need to register and insure my car here in Florida asap. I've heard that will cost me between $300 and $500
I have recently signed up for United Health Care. I should get a PCP soon, but I will now have co-pays for several doctor visits I will need. It is unclear how much I will need for all this but I will need it by December.
I have set a goal of $2,500 because money will be taken out for fees and service. I have no idea if this is enough or too much. And I don't know if I will run into problems that I can't handle just with my Social Security money. For example, I will be filing for bankruptcy after December 1st. Everything is paid for by the incredible generosity of a college classmate but who knows if there will be some unexpected expense at the last minute
I have put off taking this step for several months now because of my embarrassment. I feel humiliated, but this is my only recourse at this point.
I will be eternally grateful for any generosity you can show me.
With great love,
Peter
PS After all this is settled down I would like to move to Ft. Lauderdale, a more expensive place to live than Tampa. But that is just on a wish list for now.
