Pomegranate Room is a collective of art practitioners in the Washington D.C. area that sees the world through different lenses. We strive to create, produce, support, and nurture art that is innovative, thought provoking, and emotionally engaging. Through adaptable, accessible, and equitable storytelling, we create work that reflects a world of stories and perspectives.
Pomegranate Room was founded to amplify the voices of a new generation of theatre makers -- a generation of voices who have always been present, but have been spoken over or altogether drowned out. Pomegranate Room centers the work and stories of women, non-binary people, BIPOC, and the LGBTQ+ community. We strive to collaborate with those artists who have been kept from / pushed out of “the room where it happens'' on all sides of the stage. Whether we reinvigorate classics or give a platform to new work, we are dedicated to telling diverse stories, rather than simply using diverse bodies to tell conventional stories.
Inspired by Persephone, this festival of audio plays will focus on telling stories from mythology and folklore: particularly those of women, trans, and non-binary mythological figures, BIPOC cultures, and inversions of accepted race and gender norms within classic mythology stories.
Pomegranate Room is committed to being a theatre run by artists for artists. We strive to create a space where artists not only feel safe taking risks and telling unconventional stories, but where they are commended and compensated for it. In this spirit, we have promised to always pay our artists for their work. However, we are a small company, this is our first project, and funding is difficult to find in trying times. If we can meet the goal set by this campaign, we will be able to pay all of the artists involved with our playwriting festival for their time and effort.
Now more than ever, theatre is vital. There are lots of difficult conversations that must be had and we all have a part to play in them. Theatre is here to help facilitate. Join the conversation and donate to Pomegranate Room!
