Help Bring My Dad Home
Donation protected
Prahlad, my father, is from Mysore, India and was visiting our family in Chicago, Illinois when he was suddenly hospitalized on November 24th. He was subsequently moved to the ICU on November 26th. We were having a large, happy family gathering in our home when calamity unexpectedly befell us and our thanksgiving was shattered. Prior to this catastrophe, he had no health complications. What followed the initial hospitalization, however, none of us could have ever imagined.
Every day, new and nightmarish complications arose. Initially diagnosed with respiratory distress, and pneumonia, he was later detected to have pneumothorax, a near fatal esophageal rupture and septic shock. This means that while my Dad is responsive and alert, he can't eat, speak, or breathe on his own. He had to undergo multiple surgeries in rapid succession and has been bed-ridden on a food-pipe and ventilator for more than 30 days. His chances of survival were slim to none, but miraculously, he survived surgeries, and is still battling hard, fighting multiple infections in the ICU.
Today Prahlad was finally taken off the ventilator and is showing a positive upwards trend. My Dad has shown tremendous resilience in this fight, and continues to defy the odds every single day. He has received exceptional medical care from the staff at both Edward-Elmhurst and Loyola Medical Center; we are truly grateful for their care and efforts.
As you can imagine, the medical costs for such prolonged critical care are exorbitantly high. The current insurance coverage and our family contributions are not adequate to fully cover the medical costs. We are looking at an approximate bill of $400k, and it is expected to go up based on the estimates of his staying in the ICU for another 2-3 weeks. Subsequently, he has to go through a long term rehabilitation program before he can return home. We have exhausted all options to see if the bills can be reduced or waived off.
As you can imagine, these past few weeks have been extremely challenging and overwhelming for the family. Honestly, the financial burden is simply more than what we can afford. We are therefore appealing to your generosity with the hope that you can empathize with the situation. We would gratefully appreciate your support through a charitable donation; there is no minimum donation, and any amount you can provide will go towards defraying my father's medical costs and reuniting our family.
Even $5 would mean the world to bring my father home.
