My name is Prentice Jones, and I am a rising freshman at Barnard College. Throughout my time at Dunn School, I have been very proactive within the community. However, out of my many accomplishments during high school, I am proudest of serving on the Community Service Committee for the past four years, my involvement in Residential Life as an RA, and my contributions as an actor serving as a TA. Due to my continued involvement and passion to better my school environment, my freshman year, I was the first recipient of the “Good Shepherd Scholarship,” covering my tuition for all four years. I graduated with a 4.5 GPA and honors. I was also awarded Dunn’s highest award, “Dunn School Trophy for Excellence,” for maintaining an outstanding performance level in different areas. While I do believe it is vital to invest yourself in one’s community, it is crucial to devote time to personal growth. I try to utilize every summer to further my growth, whether it’s through working or programs that are covered through financial aid. In my junior year, I was blessed to have the opportunity to study Chilean culture and the Spanish language in Valparaiso, Chile, while staying with a homestay family for four weeks. I spent the rest of my summer in New York City taking college-level classes at Barnard College of Columbia and exploring the city. I had never felt so intellectually stimulated, and I completely fell in love with all Barnard had to offer me. Despite its status as an Ivy-League school and its 12% acceptance rate, I wasn’t discouraged. All the hard work felt worth it when I was beyond excited to be accepted via early decision to my first choice school. However, the work is not over yet.

While I was awarded over $54,000 in financial aid, my parents are still responsible for $16,030. My parents were denied from taking out a loan in an attempt to cover their portion of my tuition. I have utilized the maximum amount of loans I can take out federally, and I don’t have the means to obtain any private loans, because I don’t have anyone who can co-sign.

I am currently in jeopardy of not being able to attend college. As a first-generation college student, I would be devastated after years of hard work if I couldn’t achieve my goal of higher learning. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help in any way possible and make an investment in my future. Thank you for your time, consideration, and generosity.
