Jewish Romanian Cemeteries and Local Records — Your Support Needed!
We have been granted broad access to Jewish Romanian cemeteries for purposes of photographing and documenting Jewish graves. We have also been granted access to local community burial registers and other types of documents that survive with the local communities. This is a first of its kind agreement that will allow us to greatly expand our documentation of life in Romania. The focus of this project will be in the historically Romanian regions of Moldavia and Wallachia/Muntenia, covering towns such Bucharest, Iași, Galați, Bacău, Brăila, Botoșani and many others throughout southern and eastern Romania. **This project does not include historically Hungarian Transylvania and the Maramureș regions of Romania**
But we need your help! This is a very expansive project, so to carry it out, your support is needed. We expect that we may need to expend significant funds to clean cemeteries and gravestones, which are in part completely covered in vegetation. Many stones are literally under trees and bushes and require individual cleaning. We may also need to hire photographers if we are not able to locate enough local volunteers.
We greatly appreciate all contributions!
