Help Protect Decatur's Historic District from GA Power.
Donation protected
Decatur’s Historic District faces an immediate threat from Georgia Power. The utility plans to run a 115,000-volt transmission line through one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

Massive power poles will turn the neighborhood into an industrial corridor. They intend to remove hundreds of trees, install 100-foot steel poles in our front yards, and string high-voltage lines over our kids’ heads as they walk to school.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
THE PLAN: The project is approximately 2.4 miles long and includes approximately 1.5 miles of high-voltage lines within a City of Decatur Historic District.
EMINENT DOMAIN: Georgia Power will use eminent domain to claim easements in the yards of historic Decatur homes and place encumbrances on homeowner deeds, which will likely result in uncompensated losses in property values.
TREE REMOVAL: Old-growth trees in the neighborhood will be removed to allow massive steel power poles 4 feet in diameter and 100 feet high.
CITY CHARACTER: Decatur’s eastern gateway will change from leafy, tree-lined residential streets to an industrial corridor. The charm, character, and safety of living in a historic Decatur neighborhood may be lost for good.
HEALTH RISKS: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified magnetic fields from high-voltage power lines as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
SCHOOL ROUTE: The impacted streets are part of Safe Routes to School, a national program that makes walking and bicycling to school a safe and routine activity. Scores of children use these routes twice a day.
URGENCY: The plans have been drawn, and Georgia Power is actively procuring land and easements. Tree removal is slated for Q2 2025, and poles will be erected soon after.
ALTERNATIVE ROUTES: The City and the neighborhood support providing reliable power to the area and have identified viable alternatives to running the line through a historic residential district.
