Help protect wetlands, wildlife & walking track

Hi all,

The Council has passed provisional planning permission for a multi-lot residential development within the buffer area of the Point Fullarton Gippsland Lakes Reserve.

Our goal is to ensure this development does not destroy one of the last remaining undeveloped coastal areas and wetlands on the Gippsland Lakes and protect the areas unique wildlife & popular walking track.

In a nutshell:

• These environmentally sensitive wetlands are listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in recognition of its outstanding coastal wetland values and features.

• The area is a recognised roosting habitat for the ONLY migratory bird Snipe species in Victoria. The development will remove and damage ALL of the roosting habitat of this vulnerable bird.

• 24% of Victoria’s threatened native species live in our wetlands, wetlands play an integral part in protecting our native wildlife.

• An Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) found 12 threatened species have been previously identified nearby and 18 migratory species overfly or frequent the wetland.
