Help Rebecca Recover & Care for the Community Cats
Donation protected
Hi everyone, I’m reaching out today to share our story and ask for your support.
My girlfriend of 15 years, Rebecca Tomic, has been hospitalized with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome. It’s a stress-induced form of heart failure. At 36 years old, Rebecca had no prior heart issues and has always been in good health, making this diagnosis incredibly unexpected and challenging.
Rebecca and I are very active in the Philadelphia cat community, caring for over 18 community cats, including 12 of our own. Her diagnosis has left us unable to properly look after everyone, and the finances that usually go to feeding and veterinary services now need to cover Rebecca’s medical costs and follow-up care.
Our situation is further complicated by our planned move back to Pittsburgh to care for my father, who has late-stage vascular dementia. On top of that, I was laid off from my job at Foote, Cone, & Belding in pharmaceutical advertising (I'm actively looking) at the end of June, and Rebecca was waiting to find a new job until after our move. Within just 15 days of being without insurance coverage, she suddenly fell ill with breathing issues, which led to an 8-day stay in the ICU. At the moment, money is very tight, and the stress of these factors likely contributed to Rebecca’s heart failure.
Rebecca is currently bedridden with an ejection fraction of 20%, and we need to get it above 50% before she can start walking again and return to her normal activities. Despite these challenges, she remains eager to get back to helping the animals that depend on us.
We are setting up this GoFundMe to help cover Rebecca’s medical expenses and ensure the continued care of our beloved cats. If you’re unable to contribute through GoFundMe, we also welcome any donations through our Amazon wishlist for cat-related supplies.
Every bit of support helps, no matter the size. Thank you for your understanding and generosity during this difficult time.
With gratitude,
Nate
