Help a San Francisco filmmaker replace stolen gear

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Justin, and I'm an independent filmmaker. On Saturday, September 9, 2023, while I was sharing lunch with one of my AA sponsees in Oakland, I fell victim to an incident that stole more than just valuable equipment; it temporarily took away my ability to continue my craft and passion.

Why This Matters:

My journey has not been a linear one. Sober since January 22, 2019, photography and filmmaking have been a beacon during my recovery. It's my way of giving back and shining a light on the resilient LGBTQ+ recovery community in San Francisco, by telling the story of the Castro Country Club for my in-production feature-length documentary, Meet Me at the Club. The stolen equipment, valued over $24,000, was more than just a set of creative tools—it was a culmination of years of savings and determination, representing a chapter of rebirth from my past struggles with addiction.

Beyond personal projects, I have pressing school and professional assignments that I'm now challenged to complete. This setback affects my education, my livelihood, and the very narratives I'm so eager to share with the world.

How Your Support Helps:

Every donation will directly contribute to:

  • Replacement of Stolen Equipment: This allows me to continue my school assignments, professional projects, and my feature-length documentary.
  • General Liability Insurance Policy: A portion of the funds will secure an insurance policy, ensuring I'm protected from future unforeseen events.
  • Enhanced Security Measures: In response to this incident, I'm investing in added security for equipment storage, safeguarding against potential threats.

Through my successful recovery from substance use disorder, I've learned the power of community and the strength in asking for help. I've learned how to trust and believe in God, a God that is powerful and loving, and one who works through other people. Today, I turn to you, hoping to rebuild and continue capturing stories that matter, stories of resilience, recovery, and redemption.

Thank you for being part of my journey and for considering a donation. Every bit of support, be it monetary or simply sharing this campaign, brings me one step closer to restoring my vision and mission as a photographer and filmmaker.
