FWMA Opossums Need New Habitat After Storm Damage
WE ARE HAVING OPOSSUM MADNESS!! Florida Wild Mammal Association in Crawfordville, FL has received and rehabilitated over 120 opossums so far this year! And besides all the care and attention they require, we have an issue with their housing—or rather, their lack of housing!
Four of our opossum and squirrel enclosures were damaged by Hurricane Idalia last year. We were able to repair one before opossum season this year, and we are in the process of repairing another and replacing the damaged roof. However, the last two were complete losses because of such severe structural damage.
We have received a quote from Gulf Coast Lumber and our material cost will be $6,000 to replace our two smaller possum cages and create one larger subdivided cage.
Of course, this is a huge upfront cost for us but is unavoidable with the sheer numbers of opossum and squirrel orphans we get every year. We would love any help we can get especially since all our orphans are getting bigger and our other release cages have stayed constantly full!
Thank you in advance for your much-needed donation!
