Help The Revival and traders rebuild Kantamanto
Donation protected
6/1/2025 - UPDATE: THANK YOU!
We have reached our target of £5000 so we are no longer accepting donations as the purpose was to support the initial local response to this devastating fire. You have all made a MASSIVE difference.
On January 2nd a devastating fire destroyed much of the historic Kantamanto Market, in Accra, Ghana. I am Marta, the founder of LAGO Collective: I was lucky enough to visit Kantamanto last October and to meet Yayra Agbofah, founder of The Revival a community-led organisation based in Kantamanto. Yayra and his team are now working around the clock to respond to this immense tragedy. I am raising funds to support their efforts on the ground.
Kantamanto is one of the world largest second-hand clothing market with around 30,000 traders. Massive quantities of clothes end up in Kantamanto every year mostly coming from Western countries with an estimated 7 million items circulating weekly. While the traders and creatives of Kantamanto are able to re-sell, recycle and upcycle some of these into beautiful new garments, 10% - 40% of clothing bales are thrown away polluting the environment.
The fire will have a terrible impact: first and foremost on the local traders and communities as many of them have lost literally everything in the fire: trading stock, homes, their livelihood. The fire will also have a devastating effect on air pollution as well as on the beaches where so much fast fashion waste is dumped, given the much-reduced trading activities in the months to come.
Please donate to help Yayra and The Revival team provide immediate support to those who have lost everything in the fire and to start rebuilding this thriving market and community. The funds will be used to purchase/pay for:
- equipment like shovels and wheels barrows to clear the debris
- nose masks to protect from dust
- food and water
- transportation for volunteers
- building materials like wood, nails
PLEASE DONATE GENEROUSLY
Thanks
Marta and Yayra
