Help Recover Stolen & Wrecked Car
Donation protected
Hello, my partner and I share a car to get to and from our jobs. She is a nurse and I work as a drafter.
On 7/18/2023 sometime around 4 am, our 2013 Hyundai Sonata was broken into and stolen from our apartment's lot, all while I was asleep. Due to certain Hyundai cars lacking an engine immobilizer, the car was able to be hotwired using a simple USB cable as shown in the photos below. This is a well-known exploit unique to certain models produced from 2011 to 2021. It is also common with some Kia models. An article explaining these design flaws and their consequences is linked below.
Multiple items were removed from the vehicle during the theft, including documents with personal information, and the car was left with trash and cigarettes inside. At some point in the night, the thieves wrecked and abandoned the vehicle at a remote spot where law enforcement had located it. The car is now unsafe to drive, having faulty acceleration and possible damage to the engine.
While law enforcement conducts an investigation, we're looking to get repairs done on our vehicle so that we can safely get to and from our day jobs again. Unfortunately, our insurance is unable to cover the full cost of the repairs needed, so we're looking to get help wherever we can. Like many other working-class people, our car is vital to our day-to-day life and we'd like to do everything we can to reverse the damage done to it. Any donations are appreciated to help us reach this goal. Even if we don't reach our end goal, no amount is too small in helping us get our vehicle and livelihood back on track. Please share if you can and thank you for supporting us in our time of need!
