Help Refurbish The Hampton House Bench and More
"Everywhere there is people, there is power"! - Chairman Fred Hampton
Please join us and be part of history!
Our team is completely refurbishing the original bench that dozens of icons and community leaders/members sat on at the Hampton House (804 S. 17th Ave, Maywood IL), Chairman Fred Hampton's childhood home in Maywood.
Before he was Chairman Fred, he was just a 10 year old kid that moved to Maywood IL with his family. It was here that he found his passions and ability to inspire the masses. We aim to honor his legacy by completely this project so that an entire new generation can continue to learn about the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party and the history that this bench and home represent.
As a team we have deconstructed the bench, and will be completing:
- The stabilizing of the 2 concrete end caps. There are many structural cracks that need to be reinforced and fixed.
- The painting of the concrete end caps and sealant to preserve.
- New wood slats installed and stained the Black Panther Party blue.
- A new concrete slab poured to level out the bench area and Community Fridge.
- The original wood slats will be preserved and used to create a unique piece of art honoring the BPP and Chairman Fred Hampton. Framed and mounted on The Hampton House.
- A unique plaque adjacent to the refurbished bench that speaks to the history of this space and bench.
- Movement of the Community Fridge to fit the new space.
We estimate the cost to be approximately $2000 to complete this project. Please contribute to our efforts to help us as we execute this historical project.
