*** SURGERY IS COMPLETE!! our cowboy is on a lot of meds, underwent a 3-4 hour Stifle Arthroscopy with Partial Medial Meniscectomy and a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy. Doctor is very pleased with the procedure and thinks Remi will heal up very well. We still have his hip surgeries in the very near future but so far so good for the baby.***
Hello you amazing people who take the time to read about my sweet baby cow. Remington is about 7 years old (from what we were told after adopting him 2 years ago) and is a pitbull/ german short hair pointer mix! We went to the north county San Diego humane society looking for a mini sized buddy for out extremely energetic husky/hybrid, but upon walking up to the shelter a woman worker was walking a dog back to his kennel.... he and I locked eyes and he immediately started pulling to come over to me. Apparently this wasn't in his nature to be so bold so we HAD to meet him. it took less than a minute for me to absolutely fall in love with him..we all fell in love.
When doing the paperwork the worker disclosed that Remington had an injury when he arrived at the shelter when he was found on the streets... she said he limps and it would eventually need attention. No problem to us, he didn't deserve to sit in there another day after over a year of waiting and 2 families putting him back in the shelter.
We had multiple doctors examine the leg and for two years they've just had us doing pain management with pills, we did pet grade CBD, orthopedic beds, glucosamine/fish oil, anti-inflammatories... I finally was over masking the issue at hand and insisted they take an X-ray. When we got the X-ray results (pictured below) I immediately said "oh my gosh... its all shifted" and the doctor told me he must of been hit by a car when he was very young and his body healed itself in weird positions. He also suggested amputation of the leg completely. Hearing that broke my heart entirely and I needed a specialists opinion right away. I found a canine orthopedic surgeon and THANKFULLY he told me EVERYTHING that is going on with my baby and that we didn't need to amputate!!!!
Remington has fractures throughout his hip, pelvis, and left leg. He also has a torn ACL and meniscus, and his hips/pelvis are extremely shifted. All of these injuries result in little to no use of the left leg which has also put a tremendous amount of strain on the right causing a lot of arthritis and tendonitis. He needs a TPLO surgery (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy). He will need to go under anesthesia and they will need to cut his tibia, shift it, and screw is back into place with a plate (diagram below).... he also will eventually need a double hip replacement but we will cross that bridge when we get there. The last 3 photos are showing how twisted his back end really is, he can't sit straight comfortably so we puts his legs to the side, his left leg is also always kind of dangling behind the right, you can also see in the last one the severe amount of muscle deterioration from the lack of use.
We are the best dog parents we can possibly be, moved states to give them the life (and yard) they deserve, helped our barrel body cow lose 20 lbs to help get weight off his leg, and always include them in everything we do. We have not booked an official date until we know that we will be able to cover the costs, but all will be posted on here as well as our dogs instagram @Yuki_and_Rem along with videos of him walking and being a cow....This isn't normally something we'd do but the expense of this is something we genuinely need to ask for help with (surgery quote pictured below). Remington still has so much energy and so much life ahead of him but seeing him limp/hop everywhere and in constant pain is so draining on his fragile little soul(he totally is fragile, he got that pit sensitivity). Ken, Yukon, Remington and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to read that and/or donating what you can to help our little family out. This fur baby is my whole world, my emotional support companion and my best friend.
