I am a Washington, DC based photojournalist who has been chronicling the racial and social justice movement that has been taking place in Washington since June.
On December 12, I was photographing a confrontation between the Proud Boys fascist group, in town for Million MAGA March II, and anti-racism counterprotestors in Washington. One of the Proud Boys shot a firework that landed just a few feet from me. I was able to get away before it exploded, but I was knocked hard to the ground in the process.
One camera was destroyed and my two primary lenses were heavily damaged. Replacement and repair of the equipment will cost $2000: $550 to replace the camera, $500 to repair one lens, $750 to repair the other lens, and a little more than $200 for parts. Despite my insurance agent's assurances to the contrary, the equipment was not covered.
While photojournalism and photography don't pay much, this is my livelihood, and I can’t afford to replace the equipment that was ruined. I am asking for $1800 to restore everything to working order so I can continue photographing these critical events and to maintain my income.
Perhaps more importantly, I cannot continue to properly cover this amazing movement without this equipment.
Any assistance, no matter how small, would be deeply appreciated. Anything in excess of the repair cost will be distributed among racial and social justice organizations in Washington, DC.
