Help repair the 1st Nanaimo Scout Hut

Hi, my name is Jordan and I am the Group Commissioner for the 1st Nanaimo Scout Group. Sometime on the night of October 16th we were alerted to a fire that had been started on the porch of our Scout Hut. The log cabin structure sustained some damage on the outside of the hall, and some minor smoke and water damage inside.

While we were still dealing with this, over night on October 26/27th someone broke into the Scout Hut , vandalized both the kitchen and our camping gear storage areas, stole some of our gear, and damaged our front doors to the point that they are no longer usable.

History of 1st Nanaimo Scouts

The 1st Nanaimo Scout Group has been active in the Nanaimo area since 1918. The Scout Hut, a log cabin style building, was originally built in 1926/1927. It has been continually used as a meeting place for Scouting and other community groups since it was opened.

This group supports youth in the Central and South Nanaimo Areas. Our group has youth members from 5- 20 years old in the five sections of Scouting (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Rovers). All our Scouters are volunteers who provide many hours each week to help keep the Scouting Program going in Nanaimo, and help develop the skills and prepare the youth of Nanaimo for better success in the world.

Impact of the Fire and Break-in

Both the fire and the break-in will have a profound impact on the running of the Scouting program for 1st Nanaimo. We do have insurance to cover these, however our deductible for both of these is beyond what we have available. These events have impacted our ability to make sure the Scout Hut is both usable and safe, and our ability to properly run the Scouting programs.

Right now, we are unable to use the Scout Hut for our meetings, and the community groups that use the space no longer have access to it either.

How these funds will be used

All funds raised will be used to repair the Scout Hut, starting with purchasing and installing a new door so we can secure the Hut once again.

Any funds that are raised above and beyond the cost of repairing the hut will be used solely to ensure the delivery of the Scouting Program to the youth of Nanaimo.
