We are trying to open a wolf dog rescue & sanctuary In souther MO. I have raised wolf dogs for the past 15+ years. After handling them for so long & experiencing how difficult they can be & watching many people adopt them as puppies only to get rid of them within a couple years I decided to look into how common this was throughout the entire Wolfdog community. Once I did, I was shocked!!! According to a 2023 study out of the University of CO. 90% of Wolfdogs adopted by first time wolfdog owners will be euthanized before they reach 3 years old. Keep in mind, their average lifespan is 12-16 years… This # comes to over 150,000 wolfdogs euthanized in the US every year in the US (which comes to over 400/day).
So we decided that we want to do something about it by offering a safe place for these abandon wolfdogs to go so they can live out the rest of their lives in a happy enviroment as a pack such as they would in the wild.
too many people get them just because they look cool or they think that if they raise them from a puppy then it will act like a dog. Or since they are on average about 30% smarter than dogs. That they’ll actually be EASIER to train when it’s the complete opposite. People often think they’ll be great guard dogs or that their regular fences in yard is sufficient because it contained their German shepherd or lab when neither are the case. They almost always retain their natural instinctual behaviors to shy away from humans, especially ones they are unfamiliar with & even more, Men…
So your dream of showing your wolf dog off to friends & family just won’t come true. Unless it’s thru pics or videos because once they come over. Your wolf dog will be clawing it’s way thru the nearest exit & more than likely soiling itself on the way there… I’m sure this also explains why they’re not good guard dogs as well… Additionally, your 4’ft or even 6’ft. Fence won’t cut it for these. It’s strongly reccomended & often required to have an 8’ft. Tall fence with “Lean Ins” as well as dig guards around the entire bottom as they’re strong diggers & climbers…
Most people get them from irresponsible breeders as puppies that don’t properly explain adequate containment and/or proper training & how important immediate training upon receiving the pup is. Nonetheless, most breeders don’t do the proper training & socialization required to habituate them w/ humans in their first 6 weeks as well… Because of this, over 90% of first time wolf dog owners start to realize the challenges at about 1 year old. Many owners will try to stick it out & work with them for maybe another year, sometimes even 2 more. Often they will try to increase training about this time but unfortunately that most important window of training opportunity is immediately upon receiving the pup & as they age. Socializing them gets more & more difficult. On top of that, an experienced dog trainer does not equate a good wolf dog trainer as their behavior & temperaments are different as one is a domesticated animal & the other is not. The most important job with a wolfdog is to socialize them immediately when you get them because if they’re not socialized then training them will be almost impossible…
Because of this. Many people give up at 2-3 years & turn them over to a shelter. Sadly, many of these previous owners are unaware that wolfdogs are 99.9% euthanized in a shelter. And it makes sense why, Nobody wants to adopt a 2-3 year old mix breed that is terribly afraid of them. Likely not potty trained & even if it is. Will still have nervous accidents. Not reccomended around small animals (dogs, cats, birds etc.) or around small children… Because of this & because most shelters are well aware of the low likelihood of them being adopted out and because most shelters are severely underfunded. They normally give the WolfDogs the mandatory minimum # of days required before euthanizing them in order to not have to use any more food, time etc. on a dog that is almost guaranteed to ever be adopted…
I know, this is absolutely heartbreaking.
This is where we come in. We want to set up systems at shelters to have them call us when they receive Wolfdogs so we can pick them up asap. Provided them with a good home & in as many situations as possible. Try to socialize, train & rehab the wolfdogs so they can be succesfully put in a good home. Because although sanctuaries are literal life savers. Nothing compares to a loving home.
100% of the proceeds will be put towards the operation & every step of our journey will be documented on our social media.
