Zelda's Ongoing Care
Donation protected
Six year-old Zelda the zonkey (zebra-donkey hybrid) spent almost two terrifying weeks in a "kill pen" at a feedlot in New Jersey, awaiting transportation to a slaughterhouse. She caught my attention after she appeared on a rescue charity's Facebook page when no one bid on her at auction. Her sad eyes pierced my heart. I checked on her status on the webpage frequently throughout the week, as the clock ticked toward her deadline. I couldn't stop thinking about her, I couldn't focus on my work, I couldn't sleep. No one came forward to save her. She did not deserve to be there. None of the horses, donkeys or mules deserved this fate. On Sunday evening, November 20th, the truck arrived to take her to slaughter. I couldn't let her go. I called the feedlot and secured her rescue.
I have arranged for Zelda to go to a rescue facility in Maine until I can get her to a sanctuary in Nova Scotia in the New Year. But her rescue and transportation is costly. I am asking for help from my friends and family to get this half wild, half domesticated sweet soul to a safe place, away from the "kill pen" forever.
Most of you know that I am very passionate about animal welfare issues. Ensuring little Zelda's rescue is the least I can do, but I can't do it alone. Together we can give this little zonkey a second chance for a happy life. Your donation is greatly appreciated, no matter the amount. All proceeds will go to her rescue and care during these next couple months. Her young life was almost cut short, just because someone didn't want her anymore. Your generous support means so much to me, and to Zelda. I thank you from the very bottom of my heart. -Ashleigh
