Help Preserve Ferguson Cottage –A Historical and Cultural Treasure in Coffs Harbour and a place for many who call it home. The Jewel in the Harbour.

Headline: Help us save Ferguson Cottage: A Symbol of Aboriginal Resilience and Community.

Story:
The Ferguson Family Cottage in Coffs Harbour is more than just a building; it's a symbol of Aboriginal resilience, community, and the legacy of a remarkable woman, Evelyn "Nanny" Ferguson. For generations, this humble cottage has served as a safe haven, a bridge between cultures, and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Gumbaynggirr people.

The History:
The story of the cottage begins with grandfather Andrew Ferguson, who worked as a supervisor for the Department of Public Works in the 1950s. In exchange for overseeing the harbour construction, our family was allowed to occupy the building as their home – a rare and progressive act at a time when Aboriginal people faced discrimination and marginalization.

But the cottage's significance goes beyond its physical structure. Evelyn “Nanny” Ferguson, a pillar of the community, dedicated her life to improving the lives of her people. She fought for their rights, advocated for their education, and provided a safe haven for those in need, regardless of their background. The cottage became a place of refuge, where children were nurtured, cultural traditions were preserved, and community bonds were strengthened.

The Threat:
In 2005, the Ferguson family faced the threat of eviction, putting the future of this historical and cultural treasure at risk. However, thanks to the efforts of the Coffs Harbour and District Aboriginal Land Council, the cottage was granted a preservation order and added to the State Heritage Register in 2009.

Our Goal:
Today, Ferguson Cottage needs our help. We aim to raise funds for its ongoing preservation and restoration, ensuring this vital symbol of Aboriginal history and community remains standing for generations to come.
