Help Restore Dover School in Carriacou after Hurricane Beryl

Donation protected
My name is Kenneth Mease. I'm starting this GoFundMe to help the Dover Government School in Carriacou Grenada. The school was completely destroyed in hurricane Beryl back in July. The Dover School was the only school completely destroyed 9 months ago.

The school of 87 primary school students is being held in tents a short distance from the site of the original school. There are only 4 tents for the 7 grades - K-6. There is no office for the principal or teacher's room. At present the principal and teachers have a little corner in the kitchen that serves the preschool and the children at Dover School.

The principal, Mrs Corine McDonald and her teachers, have been doing their best to educate the kids under very tough conditions. In spite of this. Dover School was the only primary school to hold the traditional Sports Day this year, which is also the school's major fundraiser.

Luckily it's dry season here now and the problems of leaky tents and muddy conditions after the storm are no more. However, soon the rainy season will return. The original tents have just been replaced with new ones courtesy of UNICEF.

The challenge to teach in a crowded tent (most tents contain 2 grades) instead of a dedicated classroom with a good supply of textbooks, internet and tablets are many. Recently, the school received an internet connection. However there are still no lights in the tents and no tablets to allow the teachers and students to access the online curriculum. Text books remain scarce. This hurricane stressed the government of Grenada a lot. Overall, they have done a very good job with the limited resources available.

There are plans to build temporary classrooms while the new school is built. However, these temporary classrooms are still months away and the new school will take at least 2 years to complete.

The goal of this GoFundMe is to get tablets to the students, projectors for every teacher and provide lighting and better ventilation in the tents.

Unfortunately, the children's academic progress has been severely affected. Many of the children suffer PTSD every time strong winds and rain comes. Obviously, the challenges for the school and the children are many and complex.

This GoFundMe will only try to provide better tools for the teachers and children, along with better learning environment in the temporary classroom tents.
