Help restore our historic stained glass

Hanover Church stands for Hospitality, Diversity, and Justice -- and we seek these daily through our mission of outreach in our community and beyond. Hanover partners with the Jefferson Street Center in seeking to improve the life of our surrounding community, supporting various community groups within our building and promoting social justice. We also provide community outreach through our Food Pantry and Clothing Closet, our weekly Hot Dog cart, and our gymnasium.

Today we seek to share another treasure with our community: our nearly 100-year-old Chancel Window. The 5-panel, 10'x16' window faces 18th Street and the parks along the Brandywine River in the city of Wilmington, Delaware. With your help, the beauty and brilliance of the window will be enhanced inside the church, and once again visible from outside. We will add outdoor lighting to allow the community to view the window at night. And what a sight that will be, sitting in the park or driving along Baynard Boulevard!

In addition to its exquisite beauty, the window, titled "Christ, the Good Shepherd," has another unique claim to fame. It is one of the few windows designed by Anne Lee Willet, co-founder of the Willet Stained Glass & Decorating Company with her husband, William, in 1898. Anne and William, both renowned artists, made the company a leader in stained glass window making, and it still thrives today. After William’s early death in 1921, Anne became a key partner in the success of the studio and took over its management for 13 years. It was during this period that she designed "Christ, the Good Shepherd" for Hanover Presbyterian Church. Those who are knowledgeable about stained glass construction revere this window for its design and craftsmanship. Anne Willet – widow, mother, entrepreneur, business owner, manager and artist – was an impressive woman and role model, and we are proud to showcase her work in our sanctuary.
