Help Restore the Guanyin Statue at 13-15 Pike Street

The building at 13-15 Pike Street, originally constructed between 1903 and 1904, served as the Pike Street Synagogue for the Congregation Sons of Israel Kalwarie. Designed by architect Alfred E. Badt, this limestone structure was among the largest synagogues on the Lower East Side at the time, accommodating up to 1,500 patrons. In 1994, the building transitioned to house the Sung Tak Buddhist Temple, reflecting the evolving cultural tapestry of the Two Bridges/Lower East Side community.

For multiple decades, a Guanyin statue (Goddess of Mercy or Bodhisattva of Compassion) has graced the second-floor balcony, symbolizing peace and compassion, and offering warmth to residents and visitors alike.

Recently, this cherished statue was severely damaged during a series of attacks targeting local temples. The perpetrator has been arrested and charged with a hate crime. However, the temple now faces the significant challenge of restoring the Guanyin statue to its former glory.
