Help renovate the Barnesville Community Center

On February 20, 1893, J.W. Bumpass and H.B. Sowell re-deeded a lot on the corner of Barnesville Road and the Railroad Bed Road. This gift was to establish a church to be known, as Saw Creek Methodist Episcopal Church. The original Trustees were J.M. Pennington, S.W. Smith, S.A. Carrell, S.W. Jones and R.A. Massey. These are family names that are still common in this area today.

The church was built by local residents, using resources found in this area. Hand-hewn logs were used as seals, large rocks from Saw Creek were hauled and used as foundation pillars. Many services were held here, as well as funerals, weddings and baptisms. In years past Homecoming was a big event to bring folks together in the community. They would use the grounds to spread a big picnic in the yard and people came from far and near for a day of celebration.

Services were discontinued about 30 years ago and the Methodist Association has returned the property and building to be used as a community center. Due to neglect and vandalism, the building has fallen in grave disrepair. We, the community, have made some major repairs to save the 130 year old structure. We are a long way from completing the task. Currently, we are concentrating on restoring the outside of the building and replacing the windows and doors. After that is completed, we will move inside.

This is going to be a major undertaking and YES we need help. We certainly would appreciate any donations of time or money. Our best wish is to receive donations that would allow us to complete these projects. We are desperate for your help and the forefathers of our community would be proud the old building is receiving the attention it deserves.
