Help Restore Vandalized Christus Statue
Donation protected
We are creating a GoFundMe page for the restoration. Unfortunately, while being displayed at a cemetery in Utah the night before the election the front and back of the Christus was spray painted blue and black. It must go in extensive repair because of the marble. The artist that originally created the Christus has agreed to attempt to restore it to the best of his ability. Artist Dee Jay Bowden has done several of the church’s statues and historical pieces. We had insurance on the piece thinking we were safe, but because of a clause in the contract saying it can’t be on public display the claim has been denied. The estimate to restore is $36, 100.00 and will take months of manual labor. We would like to raise enough money to restore and cover taxes.
Resurrected Jesus sculpture measures 7' high and 58" across, the base measures 59" x 58". This piece depicts a standing Jesus with his arms outstretched and his upturned palms clearly show the marks from his crucifixion.
In 1998 This piece was commissioned by Gordon B. Hinkley, a prominent and much-loved President of the LDS church. The piece was commissioned to be place in the mezzanine of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, where it was on exhibition for approximately 7 years. From there it was sent to the University of Navoo in Illinois where it was on display for nearly a decade.
We are thankful for all the support that we’re have received. We are grateful for everyone's help getting this piece restored and donated. Thank you!
