Help restore Wimbledon Common's golf course
Donation protected
Wimbledon Common’s historic 18-hole course is shared by two golf clubs—Wimbledon Common (formed 1908) and London Scottish (formed 1865)—and the hundreds of hikers, dog walkers, cyclists, and horseback riders who walk and ride around the course and enjoy the open spaces. We are approaching the 150th year since the Common was protected from enclosure and building, by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act. Anniversary celebrations are planned for late summer 2021.
The golf course comprises less than 10% of Wimbledon Common. During the lockdowns golf stopped, but thousands of extra walkers and cyclists—plus the huge amount of rain that fell—turned the Common’s course areas into a mud quagmire and destroyed huge areas of grassland.
Extreme weather conditions have added to the damage. According to the Met Office, “Not only will 2020 be one of the top five hottest on record for the UK, but also it will be one of the top ten wettest and the top ten sunniest years.”
- The two golf clubs contribute £250,000 each year, funded by the memberships, to play golf on the Common.
- The golf clubs pay an additional £18,000 levy per year to the Wimbledon & Putney Commons Conservators.
- The annual levy that local taxpayers contribute does not go towards the upkeep of the course.
And now we need an additional £30,000 to restore the Common.
Will you help please?
Your donation will go to:
-Repair of damaged and unsightly grass areas
-Course reseeding materials
-More course signage
Thank you for your help!
