Help Reunite A Refugee Family-A Place For Mari
Donation protected
While providing pro bono legal services to Guatemalan refugee children separated from their families at the border, we came across a Guatemalan woman, Tranquilina, from the Mayan highlands in the department of Huahuatenango, whose 10 year old child Mari was in detention in the US for 8 months. Mari trekked to the US from western Guatemala with her 24 year old brother, Jainer, to escape criminal gangs who killed their father. She was separated from Jeiner on the Texas border as they sought asylum in February of this year, was detained as a nine year old "unaccompanied minor", and disappeared into the US child internment system. We visited Mari at an internment center in West Texas shortly after we were retained by Tranquilina, and took on the task of having Mari released from federal detention by reuniting her with her brother Jeiner, after Mari and her mother both asked us to do so.
Jeiner has been released on bond, but does not have a place to stay suitable, in the government's eyes, for Mari to be released to his care, despite her mother's pleas. Rather than sue the government to force her release, as we have done in similar cases, we decided to find and fund a place for Mari. We found an apartment for Jeiner to rent to have a place for his sister, and have applied with the government on his and his mother's behalf to have Mari placed in his care at their new home. We expect to have Mari released to Jeiner's care very soon. However, we need to find the funding for Jeiner to have the resources to care for his sister.
Please help us reunite Mari with her family by helping us show the government that Jeiner has the financial support to care for his sister. Our legal work is provided pro bono. However, we ask for help with the expenses in advocating for Mari and her family, and in providing Jeiner with a stake with which to care for his reunited sister.
Together you can help us reunite Mari with her family, and free her from almost 10 months of federal detention, by helping us find a place for Mari.
