Help Reunite Bakhodir's Family
Donation protected
On September 21st, ICE deported Bakhodir Madjitov--a Muslim immigrant and father of three--to Uzbekistan in the middle of the night. He and his wife Madina spent years fighting his case in the courts while he was in detention. The day ICE deported him was his son’s birthday, who has since struggled to eat even the foods he used to love and is now underweight as a result. Learning how to read through a computer during a pandemic is hard enough as a 6-year-old, but it is nearly cruel when you're confused about why your dad who is now suddenly very far away after being in detention.
Bakhodir contracted COVID-19 in ICE custody and continues to suffer from the long-term consequences, as well as physical pain he endured when ICE officials brutalized and tased him. He has not seen his family since he was transferred to a facility in Alabama; this December will mark three years since ICE took Bakhodir a week before his youngest son was born in 2017. He has only seen his youngest child when Madina held him up behind the glass of the detention center in Massachusetts--and has never held this child in his arms. His children and wife continue to suffer immensely from the stress of being separated from him, and they want to fight for his return as a united front.
Due to her oldest son’s asthma and past hospitalizations in the wintertime and her middle son being underweight, Madina left her job as a caretaker to be fully present for the health and wellbeing of her children who have been traumatized. She does not have an income currently, but she has had to pay hundreds of dollars in court fees and will be expecting thousands in the near future. She has been her childrens’ therapist since ICE took their father and after they deported him, and she wants to spend as much time as possible to let them experience their childhood while working to arrange their plan to reunite. Following deportations, the cost of reuniting the family, coping with trauma, and continuing to provide financially “as if nothing ever happened” falls squarely on the shoulders of family members and women who like Madina feel that ICE made them single mothers. She is expected by the government that tortured her husband to bear the cost of legal fees, travel fees, and caring for her children by herself. She wants nothing more than for her children to be able to hug their father again.
The Coalition to #FreeBakhodir invites everyone who read Bakhodir’s story on www.freebakhodir.org, shared our content, or sent emails to ICE officials to make any size contribution they can or share this story so that others can contribute. Donations to the GoFundMe will go towards the costs itemized below, but supporters are encouraged to send toys and activities like puzzles, science kits, building sets, musical instruments, and art supplies so they can continue to spend time together to heal and support each other while they are fighting to be reunited with Bakhodir. If you would like to send or order these items for Madina and her family, please send us a contact request through the website.
