Help Rob Roig Walk Again
My long time friend, Robert Roig, experienced a stroke at the end of May 2021. Rob is in his mid-50's, single, and the sole caregiver for his mother, Joy, who is in her 80's. The stroke left him with slurred speech and unable to stand unassisted. He made progress with his speech and can walk with assistance, but is currently unable to stand without help. His insurance company sent him home against the advice of his physical therapists, because it didn't want to cover more hospital time, but won't cover an in-patient rehabilitation facility. Robert continued to make progress, but not fast enough to satisfy his insurance company. He was sent home to the care of his elderly mother in mid-June 2021. He was unable to stand without help from another able-bodied adult .
Robert and Joy were unable to take care of his most basic needs at home and had to call 911 within 24 hours for a return to the hospital. His insurance company has denied his request for continued rehabilitation services in a care facility. His physical therapists see progress in his walking/standing, and his motivation to get back on his feet is strong. They recommend continued in-patient therapy. Insurance has denied his request, and he will be sent home again in early July.
Patient motivation is the best indicator of continued recovery in stroke patients. Robert is highly motivated to recover more fully so he can continue to live with and care for his mother, Joy. His goals are to regain his strength and balance so he can stand independently and to speak more fluently. Robert can already walk with a walker. His speech is clear, and he continues to make progress when he gets routine therapy. He wants to eventually return to his job at a telephone support center.
- Please help Rob pay for the therapies he needs to more fully recover and care for himself and Joy. Any amount will help him with the uncovered costs of continued physical therapy so that he can stand unassisted.
- There may be a need for help to arrange their home to accommodate assistive devices in the near future. This page will be updated as needed with specific requests for non-financial help to assist with Robert's continued recovery.
- Thank you for your prayers and support!
