Help Rodrigo Support His Family

Recently, Rodrigo’s parents, in Santiago, Chile have had to leave their home. And, due to heartbreaking and surprising changes to existing plans for this time in their lives, Rodrigo is suddenly scrambling, along with his extended family, to cover medical and care home expenses for his dad, Jose, as well as home care expenses for his mom, Victoria. Anyone who knows Rodrigo knows he is a sweet, adoring person. It is a really hard and sad time attempting to make the best choices for his family. They have already spent several thousand dollars covering hospitalization costs, medicines, medical supplies, clothing, visits to the doctor, travel and medical transfers, etc. Any support will ease a lot of pressure.

Rodrigo’s dad has dementia, chronic liver damage, altered consciousness, gastrointestinal illness, respiratory distress connected to limited mobility and emphysema, and second degree burns. He requires complex care, needs to live in a care home, and has frequent hospital stays. Rodrigo’s dad’s pension does not fully cover the costs of his care. Until he can move into a subsidized care home, Rodrigo and his family are juggling expenses beyond their capacities. He is on a waitlist, but the wait time is difficult to assess, and could be a year, or more.

The cost of one year of this care, including the supplies family is responsible to provide is $6000.00. Rodrigo will also need more money to cover additional costs that arise as his dad’s needs change.

Rodrigo is also responsible for planning and arranging supports for his mom. He is exploring the possibility of bringing her to Winnipeg, but this is complicated by her age, health, and her own fear and discomfort imagining leaving her home. And, it is financially overwhelming.

Extended family is able to provide Rodrigo’s mom with care for now, but Rodrigo is unable to fund it appropriately in addition to the other expenses. At this time, the cost of supporting her care is approximately $2400 per year.

The expenses related to bringing Rodrigo’s mom to Winnipeg are higher. A short stay, or up to a year, would range between $3000-$10,000 including travel costs and health insurance. To bring her to Winnipeg for longer, would cost around $6000 per year.

So, we are hoping to raise $10,000 for Rodrigo and his family. Even if we don’t meet this goal, any amount is generous and so helpful. All funds raised will go directly towards these expenses. Thank you so much for your support!!
