Help Ron and Betsy

For the past 5 years, Betsy has been fighting a brain tumor and after 3 serious out of pocket surgeries there is still inoperable residual. And even though Ron and Betsy are able to stay lighthearted through the process, this has created an immeasurable amount of emotional and financial stress on the couple. In the meantime, Betsy is unable to work.

About 4 weeks ago, Ron and Betsy took the 8 hour drive up to Stanford Hospital (in Palo Alto) for a trial treatment program. Their hope was that she would not have to undergo another surgery, but was given the news that she will need to undergo another one. While she was being tested, Ron fell ill. He was admitted to the ER with fever and in excruciating abdominal pain.

Tests showed that Ron is inoperable due to severe inflammation of the organs. He remains on pain medication and antibiotics. He is awaiting surgery himself in hopes that it can be done without life threatening consequences. Betsy’s treatment program had to be suspended as Ron was still in the hospital as he is her primary caretaker as well as driver.

To date, they are both in a holding pattern and have to stay in a hotel near the hospital until Ron improves to where the doctor’s can go forward with his surgery. However, they do not have the funds for continued stays in hotels so Betsy has been sleeping in Ron's hospital room.

Ron & Betsy have appointments to see their doctors for tests and hopefully plans for treatments and surgery can be scheduled. They cannot go back home to San Diego as they still need to be located near the hospital in case of any emergencies and need for medical care.

This situation has caused unexpected expenses for lodging, food and medical co-pay costs that continue to mount until they can be released from the hospital and get back home to southern California.

Ron is retired and the added stress of medical expenses on top of the medical complications has been taking it’s toll on both of them. They will be there for an unknown amount of time.
