On December 5th, 2024, the Rivas family’s world turned upside down when their beloved two-year-old son, Silverio Jose (SJ), was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). This devastating news has brought heartache and challenges beyond what any family should endure.

Who is SJ?

SJ is the light of his family’s life. Despite his young age, SJ is a sweet, energetic, and loving little boy who lights up every room he enters. He adores playing with his four older sisters, Mariana (15), Gaby (10), Aleia (5), and Sabella (4), who look up to their little brother with endless love. But now, their playful times have turned into moments of worry and adjustment, as their baby brother bravely battles leukemia.

The Struggle SJ Faces

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is an aggressive form of cancer that requires intensive and ongoing treatments, including chemotherapy, hospital stays, and countless doctor visits. While SJ fights with incredible strength, his treatment plan will span the next several years and demand continuous attention from his parents.

The Toll on the Rivas Family

SJ’s parents, Rosendo and Elizabeth, have always worked tirelessly to provide for their family of seven. However, SJ’s diagnosis has placed an enormous financial strain on their household:

    •    Rosendo, a devoted father and hard worker, will exhaust all his paid leave and will have to rely on unpaid FMLA time to support SJ throughout his treatments.

    •    Elizabeth recently started a new job but had to resign from work entirely to become SJ’s full-time caregiver, especially as the needs of his care grow more demanding.

    •    The family now faces medical bills, travel expenses to treatment centers, medication costs, and everyday living expenses for their five children.
