Help The Williams Family Walk Rufus Home

I'm writing this from my dad's hospital room– just a few floors away from the hospital room I was in at NYU Langone over the summer. Simultaneously as I was recovering, my dad's health was in decline - the doctors discovered an extremely rare and aggressive cancer in his abdomen. The first miracle was finding it in the first place, the second miracle was getting him from Kentucky to New York, to see some of the best doctors in the country. He's gone from 190lbs of pure muscle that used to work ramps at Delta tossing luggage, to ~140lbs; emaciated, exhausted, but fighting.

My mother, my sister, myself, and my partner have been supporting him, and each other since they've relocated to New York basically overnight. Emotionally, financially, and spiritually - we've felt so much love and support during these months... and frankly the entire past decade, as I beat my own battle with cancer.

I write this with so much gratitude and humility. Asking for help is never easy for me, and so many have asked for help on my behalf. Now it's my turn to ask for help for my dad (and mom) as they navigate the financial burden of medical costs with soon-expiring insurance, relocation expenses (sublease costs, utilities, etc.).

Finances are one part of a very complex equation, but one that is a great help that is a simple outlet for those looking to help them out during the coming months and years of recovery for not only him, but my mom as well.

The long-term hope is to relocate them both semi-permanently to one of the five boroughs in NYC to give them easy access to treatment and his doctors @ NYU, where he has access to off-label and potentially experimental treatment. At minimum, they have tools to give him comfort that we cannot on our own, or in Kentucky where they are moving from.

I know everyone is different and every body reacts to things differently, but as an example of my own battle and victory - and as a testament to fighting like hell, in spite of prognosis... I'm a little stubborn in standing behind him pushing as hard as he can.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything that you've already done for me and anything you can help us do for them.

Rufus is a fighter, a believer and most of all - he's my dad.

Love you all.
