My name is Rusty, and I am facing an incredibly challenging situation that has profoundly impacted my life. On May 31, 2024, I was unlawfully arrested by the Little Falls Police Department and the Minnesota State Troopers. This unjust arrest led to a night spent in jail, causing me to miss my daughter’s graduation—a day I had long anticipated sharing with her.

The Incident:

My arrest originated from a traffic stop that has since gone viral, garnering over two million views online. The overwhelming support from tens of thousands of viewers has highlighted the urgent need for justice against police misconduct, a problem that affects many.

Unfortunately, this incident has taken a significant toll on my life:

My partner Tina and I, who have been together for 17 years and are both nearing five years of sobriety, had been diligently working towards our goal of building a small cabin by the lake. We purchased a cabin that we moved to our property, and we have invested countless hours and resources into this dream—a dream that provided us solace from the struggles of addiction. However, this vision came to an abrupt halt due to my unlawful arrest and the subsequent trauma inflicted by those who abuse their power. While I recognize not all law enforcement officers behave in this manner, those who do must be held accountable.

Additionally, I want to share that I had been 45 days nicotine-free before this incident; however, the stress has led me to relapse, which feels like a personal defeat. I am determined to reset that goal soon.

Financial Strain:

Towing and Impound Costs: The cost of impounding my car has placed additional financial strain on me during this difficult time.

Interlock Device Charges: I am now required to have an interlock device installed in my car, incurring weekly fees.

Loss of Income: Since my arrest, I have lost my job, and my Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) has been revoked for life. I am currently appealing this decision in the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Insurance and Medical Costs: I have lost my health insurance through my employer, resulting in overwhelming medical expenses from previous incidents and ongoing therapy.

Legal Battle: I have legal representation for the civil aspect of my case in the Minnesota Court of Appeals and a capable legal defense attorney who is currently engaged in another trial. While I would love to share more about them, I want to respect their privacy before they give consent. I am also seeking a civil rights attorney, but the costs associated with legal representation can be substantial.

My past experiences with police brutality—a harrowing incident in 2020 where I was tased multiple times and beaten into a coma—remind me of the importance of fighting against such abuses of power. Although the charges from that incident were eventually dismissed, the trauma remains.
